Blush Pink Ranunculus No. 2 (2026)
22” x 30”
Drawn on acid-free, 100% cotton cold-pressed watercolour paper using alcohol-based markers.
Artist’s Note:
I decided to experiment using alcohol-based markers on cold-pressed watercolour paper, a surface that I hoped would still allow me to build layers of ink. I was drawn to the weight and texture of this particular paper, but I discovered that its more pronounced texture created a very different drawing experience. While it limited the blending techniques I had become accustomed to, it encouraged me to embrace the expressive quality of the visible brush-tip strokes.
The result was a piece with a distinct texture and atmosphere. Rich burgundy and reddish tones emerge from within the petals, softened by layers of peach and pink hues, while the detailed green centre draws the eye into the heart of the bloom. Without a stem, this ranunculus appears almost suspended, allowing the viewer to linger on the intricate green centre nestled within the layered petals.
This piece is best appreciated from a distance, where the individual strokes come together to reveal soft, floating petals with a velvety quality and layered depth.
